We are seeing disconcerting patterns in mental wellbeing of the youth we support. Prior to Covid-19, mental support was minimal and not reaching children who needed it most. Covid-19 aggravated mental illness like an allergen does to an eczema rash. The co-existing challenges of increased poverty, loneliness, uncertainty and losses amplified the emotional insecurity triggers and so many of our young people had to get psychiatric care for the first time, when before their symptoms were managed with therapy and social support. There is a huge need for organic mental health support originating with specialist mental health teams and incorporating VCS organisations like Just Kidding, who have the trust and relationship with young people and their stakeholders. We are doing our utmost to make our support as organic and holistic as possible.
We don't treat symptoms; we see children as whole people and support includes conventional and unique methods which help young people believe in their own ability and desire to heal.
